Q: Pedigree vs Purina Dog food?
I own two dogs, a Yorkie, and an American Staffordshire terrier. Is it better to feed them Pedigree or Purina? They are both a year old and healthy dogs. I am having a hard time finding a food that they like.

Either one is fine.
Used to feed Diamond until I got a bad batch (diarrhea) All the responses about these being inferior to the expensive brands crack me up. These two started the dry food and have been around decades longer than any other brand for a reason. I really like that Pedigree has kibble in it to clean teeth.
Purina supports teeth too and has been making dog chows since 1926. Dogs are animals. They eat other dead animals, and feces, and chew on wood for fun. just feed them good quality food that’s affordable to you and as they get older and gain weight and become less active switch to a maintenance food.

Both Pedigree and Purina are low-quality foods and have fillers and corn…..to be honest,t these foods are crap contrary to their advertising…Go to a pet store and find foods with the same or even LOWER prices that have FAR better quality such as Blue Buffalo, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Natural Balance, FROMM, Wellness, and Eagle Holistic – these are all excellent foods for less or not much more than Purina….

It’s funny how everyone who doesn’t feed these brands downgrades it… I’m a Purina parent……my VET had to do surgery on my dog and she had a 1/3 chance of living…as she did make it out of surgery the vet asked me what I fed my dog she’s in perfect health and the perfect weight for her breed I smiled with confidence and said Purina dog chow…and he said keep up the good work she’s perfect. So to u people out there that downgrade the Purina company SCREW U…if it was so bad the VET would have said that I needed to switch her….she is now 8 yrs old and still acting like she’s a puppy…

ANOTHER LITTLE TIP - When you feed your dog QUALITY, HIGH PROTEIN/ NO GRAIN DOG FOOD, you will also notice that your dog will EAT MUCH LESS FOOD & will go POTTY A LOT LESS & it will be much FIRMER as well - a sign of a healthier diet! So technically for those of you that think it's going to cost much more - you will end up actually buying less BC it will keep them fuller longer.
For example - a high protein, grain-free diet for my 3 large dogs (130lb, 85lb & 70lb), I buy a 30lb bag that lasts me a month - & that's feeding them 2x a day (though they get a tsp each of grain-free can meat at dinner time only mixes in w kibble too). I do use Blue Buffalo (or Canidae, which I prefer for canned meat with less fat, though fat with protein is good). In nature, you will never see wild canines chomping on an ear of corn when they're hungry, right?
You will also have fewer stomach problems as well...

I have an American Staffordshire terrier he is a beautiful dog I used to feed him pedigree for older dogs and he loved it, it kept him healthy and kept him built... I had to change him to Ole Roy for the last two months and it has taken its tole on his skin and coat – now I've got him on Purina and gonna try that for a while as my vet told me to put him back on one of the two an just keep him active, that the natural food is great for your animal if u have that kind of funds as my dogs can go thru a 40-pound bag of dog food in no time and yet he is not fat!
I wouldn't recommend that u feed your dog anything lower than Pedigree or Purina as it's not good for your animal .. just had to put my thoughts in there.

Pedigree vs Purina? Those are two horrible horrible brands, they are filled with corn fillers and by-products! they have no nutrients at all!
I would recommend brands like Wellness, Innova, Evo, Halo, Blue, Orijen,
There are many good natural dog foods and holistic ones...
just make sure that you know how to read the label to determine which is good and which is not.
Iams, Eukanuba, and Science Diet believe it or not are low-quality foods but they are on average more expensive than some higher-quality foods in pet stores due to popularity through false advertising. Remember to gradually change their diet over 2 weeks to prevent bad diarrhea and gas in your dogs.
Please don't feed Purina or Pedigree, they are not nutritional healthy foods in the least.

NEITHER Pedigree nor Purina!! Here is also a list of bad pet food brands:
Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Nutro Max, Goodlife Recipe, Science Diet, Prescription Diet, Gravy Train, Alpo, Amore, Pedigree, Nature's Recipe, Bil Jac, Royal Canin, etc.
Please, do not feed your dog those foods!
As a dog nutritionist, I recommend an RMB (raw meat and bones) diet! This is the best your dog can get, natural, healthy, flavorful, and very good for dogs with dental problems. Ever since Zodi was started on the diet, he has been free of any health problems (fleas, hotspots, worms, infections, etc). If you worry about parasites/bacteria, dogs can handle these, they have been fine for thousands of years on this diet. Commercial (canned/dry kibbles) pet food has only been around for 60 years, and how did the dogs survive before these? Raw meat and scraps. So if they were fine then, they will be fine now.
Commercial pet food causes VERY bad reactions in dogs because most of them have preservatives that have been banned in people's food because they cause tumors, birth defects, allergies, liver/heart failures, and other bad things... Some of them even have euthanized animals (even pets!) in them ("meat by-products", "meat and bone meal", "meat meal"). Corn, which is the main ingredient in most pet foods, is an allergy trigger in many cats and dogs and is not needed. It is used as a cheap filler.
- How long should diarrhea last after the change of food?
- What is better Royal Canine or Purina Pro Plan dog food?
- What is the best dog food brand for a giant breed like Saint Bernard?
Many vets are inexperienced with animal nutrition and will recommend the wrong food. Sometimes they are ever bribed to recommend pet foods. But on with feeding raw.
This diet is about 70% of meat and bones and the rest is organs, vegetables, fruits, oils, and vitamins. Do not bother adding grain or dairy, for dogs do not need these and cannot use them. For energy, dogs use fats from animals. If you worry about exact nutrition, please don't, when you make dinner for yourself or your family you don't say "I need Xcups salad, Xcups beef, Xcups beans, and three multi-vitamin supplements." so why stress about your dog? As said earlier, before commercial pet food, no one fed a strict diet, and their dogs were fine. So don't worry.
I listed some recipes below.
Chicken Dinner (for a 30-40 lb dog)
1 pound chicken (with bone)
1 egg
1/2 cup vegetables
vitamin supplement
Beef and Sardine
1/2 pound beef (with bone)
2 fresh wild sardines
1 carrot
1 banana or apple
Lamb Breakfast
Lamb's necks
1 tomato
1 egg
Tripe

OMG! DO NOT FEED YOUR DOGS GROCERY STORE OR WALMART/ OLE ROY BRAND DOG FOODS!!!! You’re going to end up killing your dog, if not now – in the long run which will be much shorter than his normal lifespan!!! DIAMOND MFG & TASTE OF THE WILD FOODS ARE NO BETTER – THEY HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO KILL DOGS BC THEYRE MADE IN CHINA & FULL OF NON EDIBLE INGREDIENTS THEY DONT TELL YOU — LIKE MELAMINE, WHICH IS WHAT PLASTIC PLATES, BOWLS ARE MADE OF!!!
DO YOUR RESEARCH ON DOG FOOD RECALLS! Anything not regulated, made un the US (& even then some) put all kinds of non-edible fillers in their foods & certainly aren’t going to list them! Not to mention the facts that all those JUNK CHEAP dog foods your feeding your pooch has highly INDIGESTIBLE ingredients that dogs CANNOT PROCESS! If your dog has diarrhea from their food, TAKE IT AS A HINT! YOU SHOULD NOT BE FEEDING THAT CRAP!!! Dogs, wolves, etc. CANNOT DIGEST corn, soy, or many grains that are used un making making dog foods -esp the cheap ones. If you genuinely care about your dog, the least you should fees is “maybe” grain free U.S. brands, possibly Rachel Rays (BC I do t think she wants to get sued for selling crap), but I would say the least – BLUE BUFFALO brands are the best & most affordable fir a decent quality dog food. It sickens me to death to see people feeding animals they supposedly care for, crap that will kill them. If they wont eat it, maybe take the hint from them that something’s not right…
Many people force fed their dogs Diamond brand mfg’d foods BC their digs wouldn’t eat it, & it ULTIMATELY KILLED THEM – after suffering painful kidney or liver failure in the end. Only after hundreds of dogs DYING from that food, did they finally investigate & test the food, only to end up doing a massive RECALL! The dogs knew better. A little extra now will save you fr much much more when you have to pay the vets many times over to figure out whats wrong with your dog, only to then have it DIE!
Research all the recalls & why… The same goes for any treats, esp that are imported from CHINA!!! They have no standards they think they have to follow..all that diseased chicken they cant feed to humans & are supposed to dispose of, are often silently used to make you dogs chicken jerky treats too… READ PEOPLE, READ!!!

I feed my dogs Science Diet and healthy treats good for their teeth. Science Diet has special food for different ages of dog, for dogs with sensitive skin or sensitive stomachs. I also buy liver for the dog. The dog has fresh water and sees vet regularly for check ups, this is less costly than taking dog only for emergencies and shots.

oh, dog likes apples too. One of my dogs loved avacados.

Avocados are toxic! You may not realize it now, but when your dog goes into kidney failure….

I have fed Purina products for 50+ years. Every Doberman or yorkie puppy that I ever raised has had excellent health, all my Dobermans make the longevity list from the DPCA. All my yorkies are superior in health to many other breeders dogs. Yes, I research the parents, the grandparents too before I buy a dog for showing or breeding and I want the best with NO health issues. My dogs have been shown, where I have had more people ask me ‘What do you feed your dogs, they are in great body condition and that shine, what do you bathe them with?” Ha ha, I was too busy to even bathe them sometimes so took a washrag with plain water and wiped them down! That shiny coat is from WITHIN. All the ‘expert’ pet owners read too much hype and BS off the internet I think. I am proud to have had dogs that won breed awards from world-class big shows like Westminster. I agree with you, Purina Puppy or Purina ProPlan and 1/2 cup of lean beef per day is a perfect diet! Experience and results are what Purina has, take your potatoes and salmon, I’ll go with PROVEN results and old dogs that don’t have medical issues!

Hi,
Most of the answers on here are correct. Neither of those foods is very good.
Depending on your budget there are various "all natural" etc.. foods available which are ok for your dogs.
You just need to do some research.
Check out my FREE mini course that will give you the basics on how to pick a good food.
Good luck and enjoy your pets!!

I hope you are aware that Purina makes over 100 different products, some good, some not so good in my opinion. So which one did you have in mind?
A simple way to get a dog to "like" a new food is to add a little something to it for the first few days. I use canned pumpkin for the task because it resolves a few other problems at the same time.

Amen Purina dog chow all the way my family has always used it and never had an issue and I will continue to also…
