Pine.apple: How can I stop my 4-year-old Pomeranian from peeing on the carpet?
I have a 4-year-old Pomeranian who was trained to go to the bathroom outside. Lately, she has been lazy and she is peeing on our carpets. I scold her, that is I show her what she's doing but that doesn't help. Sometimes she goes outside to do her business, and other times she does it in the house.
What exactly do I need to do to teach her not to pee inside the house? Is it because she is lazy?

First of all, I'd schedule a visit to the vet's office to rule out medical issues. If that's not the problem, then it's time to start potty training all over again. Scolding is useless, and showing her what she did, probably after the fact, is also useless.

I would definitely get a urine sample and drop it off at my vet's as soon as possible! Sounds like she might have a UTI…if she's straining, she may possibly have urinary stones or even a blockage….best to take her to the vet with fresh urine sample!

Clean the carpet with a special cleaner to get rid off the ammonia smell.
Maybe she won't go out because of bad weather or she's scared of something outside.
If it persists take her to the vet.

Go back to toilet training, that is take her out after she wakes up, after eating and after playing, be with her stand and wait quietly until she toilets and then praise her, so you reinforce what you want her to do……the trouble with scolding dogs who toilet in the house it is drawing attention to what you don't want and any attention is better than none…it also makes dogs anxious and more likely to go toilet in the house……..restrict her space if you need to leave her, which will help her understand not to toilet in the house….as unless she has a medical issue dogs don't toilet where they sleep/play/eat.
Your Pom is not lazy, she just needs her toilet training being reinforced.

Hm, a change in behavior like that after 4 years of training is abnormal and such a change should be cause for alarm.
She is probably not lazy, but sick and her body is trying to tell you that but you aren't listening. Take her to a vet just to be safe and, if it turns out it is a behavioral problem, the vet may be able to give you some advice on how to retrain her.

Do not scold your Pom or stick her nose in the pee. It will make her fear you and you don't want that.
Have a vet check-up first.
Make sure you are letting her go outside enough.
If you catch her in the act, make a distraction noise so she stops. Then immediately take her outside to pee. She is not lazy. You are lazy when you have to use harsh techniques that don't work.

Potty train her, crate train her, take her out after she's done napping, eating, sleeping, playing, feeding, etc... every 30 min, etc...
Who cares if she's lazy, she STILL needs exercise and she STILL needs training. You're too lazy if you don't feel like doing it. That's why you must train her.
If this is out of NOWHERE then she needs to see a vet ASAP.

Maybe you should take her to the vet. Sounds like she may have kidney stones, bladder stones, or a UTI.

Have you caught her in the act? Does she sleep on the carpet? Have you noticed any other problems with your 4-year-old Pomeranian?
When a housetrained dog starts to pee inside the house it can be a sign of a health problem.
The problem could also be behavioral, as a result of stress or anxiety. If the issue is as a result of anxiety then you may also need to talk to your vet about medications that could help, or other treatments like DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) diffusers that could help your dog relax while she is in the room.
If it is simply because she is now used to peeing on the carpet then the carpet needs to be completely cleaned to ensure she can't smell urine on it (and remember that a dog's sense of smell is a million times better than ours- so they can pick it up even if you can't) and she needs to be re toilet trained.

It might also be she is having bladder issues. Maybe her bladder has fallen or losing bladder control.

By now it's an established "potty place", so you need to absolutely NEUTRALIZE the area, not just clean and deodorize, you get a pet urine neutralizer and clean the area she pees thoroughly.
Your Pomeranian could have a urinary tract infection too, that's the first thing I'd rule out – take her to the vet and have a urine culture done.
Meanwhile, don't let your Pom have free roam of the house, baby gate her into a safe area where she can't do any damage when you can't watch her. You don't let this go on, it becomes disgusting, so you need to find the reason for this – vet for UTI check – and change the behavior (clean the area with neutralizer, keep the dog where you can see her).
