I have both, Maremma is more aggressive, and smaller, PYR is very patient and long-suffering… but when they get mad you better look out! Maremma included…

Pyrenees mountain dogs are also more than a thousand dollars to buy and haven't got a huge life span due to their size either.

The Great Pyrenees breed is definitely larger than the Maremma. I had a pure Pyr a few years ago and she was HUGE (125 lbs), very sweet and loving with her humans and smaller animals. She was a beautiful dog who sadly crossed over Rainbow Bridge. I now have a Great Pyrenees/Maremma Sheepdog mix who is also quite majestic-looking, and extremely sweet, gentle and very affectionate with her humans. She’s a big girl but weighs only 100 lbs. Her parents were both on the smaller side… dam – Maremma, sire – Great Pyrenees. :)

The Great Pyrenees is bigger and you shouldn't get a dog just because you want a big dog.
Do research on both breeds to see which fits your lifestyle more and just have the characteristics you want in a gentle giant!

Our male Maremma is 130 lbs. lean big boy, but lives outside and all night is constantly eating yard snacks(anything that sneaks in to try to get our chickens) cats, possums, raccoons… Awesome breed. They bark less than the Pyrenees at cars, passerby a on street, bikes… They think a lot and are very smart. And live longer than the Pyrenees. I would buy Maremma over the Pyrenees again.

I have a 2-year-old Maremma, he’s 150 lbs. He is a big mush and wants to be a lap dog since my Doberman passed 3 weeks ago. They were inseparable.

I have a Great Pyrenees and Maremma mix, she is the smartest, most loving dog I’ve ever owned!! She is a year and a half weighs 53 lbs. Is great with other animals and does not wander after lots of supervision and training.

1/ Great Pyrenees
This is the AKC site for the GP. Here is what it says:
"The Great Pyrenees dog conveys the distinct impression of elegance and unsurpassed beauty combined with great overall size and majesty. He has a white or principally white coat that may contain markings of badger, gray, or varying shades of tan. He possesses a keen intelligence and a kindly, while regal, expression." 85-100lbs. 25-32"
2/ Maremma Sheepdog
This is the MS breed club. It says:
"The Maremma is a large white or cream-colored dog, usually weighing between 70 and 100 pounds and standing 25 to 30 inches tall. It is described in the Breed Standard as being majestic, lively, sturdy, distinguished, intelligent, and courageous without being aggressive. Properly trained, it has the ability to bond closely with sheep, goats, alpacas, and llamas, with which it assumes a protective parental attitude, it demonstrates and an aloof awareness as leader of its adopted family."
Obviously, the size will vary in both breeds as dogs will not always adhere to the standard.
And whichever dog you choose, be prepared for tons of fur, tons of exercise, tons of poop, tons of food, and possibly a protective dog.
Be sure to buy ONLY from a good breeder who does genetic testing, has a spay/neuter contract, and who is breeding to advance the breed.

Our female Maremma just went to doggie heaven. She was the sweetest dog we ever had. She weighed 72 pounds and was 13 years old when she passed. They are intelligent and she had a vocabulary of at least ten words. She knew she could get a treat if she said: "I love you, mama".
We were fortunate to find her at a shelter, and she repaid us every day for taking her home.
Their coat is easier to maintain than the Pyrenees and of course a smaller dog. Get the Maremma, you won't be sorry.

My fiance's parents have a Great Pyrenees, and she is absolutely wonderful. She is very big though. She is only 6 months old and weighs almost 100 pounds. She is very protective and very playful. They really are great dogs!! I'm not at all familiar with the Maremma Sheepdog, but the Great Pyrenees is a great dog! Good luck!
