Q: Where can I get a fairly priced Black Russian Terrier puppy?
I was doing some research, and a Black Russian Terrier is exactly what I need. Because of its protective instincts, though, I need to get it young. Where can I get a Russian Terrier puppy? The closer to central Oklahoma, the better.

I got to meet 4 of the first 8 Black Russian Terriers that entered the U.S......Monsters! There really aren't that many breeders in the U.S. that are breeding for working ability in the BRT. Fairly priced I'm sure it is still gonna be well over $ 1000.

Black Russians are still very rare and the ones here in the States and in Canada are from kennels that actively show in conformation. I can tell you, after seeing them "in action" at many dog shows, they need the most advanced obedience training possible, they need a very firm and dominant owner, and even then it is a crapshoot. They simply have not been bred long enough to be considered "pets" or to have reliable temperaments. Unless you have tons of experience with large, dominant breeds, I would not think you could find a kennel willing to sell to you.

I would also highly suggest you look for a reputable breeder & never buy from anyone else, papers or not – they are guaranteed to be healthier & have more suitable temperaments. Breeders don't always have litters that are all show quality – which is where pet-quality pups come in.
If it is a reputable breeder, they are usually also certified against certain health problems that can be common with the breed – though it's not always 100% (BC you can’t determine ultimately what a dog will have or not), that's where the pedigree line comes into play with the line. If a parent/ grandparent isn't predisposed, you may very well not have the extra worry down the line.
Seeing that you’re from the Midwest, I would make certain to stay away from the puppy mills that don’t care one way or the other what you end up with, though considering the rarity of this breed in the US, I doubt at this time that many puppy mills or backyard breeders are breeding them yet… A good breeder will also have you sign a contract, as well as take back the dog at any time for whatever reason. You would have to get into that with the breeder. A non-show quality pup should probably run about $2500, as there aren't many in the US either.
I also agree that if you don’t have advanced training skills with this level of dog, you most likely won’t be approved by a breeder, as they take ownership of their animals very seriously. You also would have to prove that you have the appropriate, long-term conditions of your home to provide a proper environment – prob incl a decent sized secure/ properly fenced yard, that the dog will be kept as an indoor dog, training & ownership experience with this level of the dog, & esp the time to put in on a regular basis, high-quality food needs are met, etc.
These, and every dog, technically should never be kept as an outside dog, or tied up for long periods of time & they need a high level of everyday socialization & being part of the family for one… requiring a LOT of your one on one time/ not crated or coupes up all day, & plenty of daily exercises…

I disagree with the above statements. I have a black Russian terrier bitch and she has a reliable temperament and is very sensitive to what is required from her. She learns quickly and is very obedient and very loving.
The one thing you should know though is that the BRT is a companion animal and does not do well if away from its owner, shut in a yard or kennel. The BRT thrives when it can be with its owner. If you can't be at home 85% of the time, then don't get a BRT

Try the Black Russian Terrier Ethical Breeders Association. This association was formed, as they say, "by a desire amongst a group of breeders to provide a resource for potential puppy purchasers (especially those unfamiliar with either the breed or the breeders they may try to contact), to get honest information on the Black Russian Terrier, the health concerns of the breed, and resources to evaluate any litter that you might be interested in."

I am getting ready to retire and looking for company dog to go places with who will protect me but not be aggressive to others that may approach to talk. This dog will have 12 acres to run on. I don’t need a show quality dog and can be mixed breed but I like looks of a Black Russian terrier and will have time to train myself and him/her. How can I find one?

We would love to have a Black Russian Terrier puppy, female. We have 6 cats and not sure how much longer our dog will be around. We in the past had one that was a cross breed, great dog with other animals that is what we hope someday to find. We cannot seems to locate any in the USA.

No breeders around in Chicago, I live in a townhome, neighbor across the street lives in a condo. We both flew in our Black Russian Terrier into Ohare airport as puppies from different breeders.
Her male is ferocious, mine loves everybody. I think the main difference is I walked mine three x a day or more, since I have no yard, at all hours, took mine everywhere, including 6 week courses x 3 (at Petsmart). Took it to walk by school playground during recess with screaming kids, and to puppy playtimes.
I talked to her a lot. Every walk was a learning opportunity, pointing look: a dogdie, baby, the man, bicycle, car, bunny, rabbit, squirrel, birdie, kitty cat, etc., having her heel, stop at every street before crossing, sit at every stop, whatever..
To have city manners, not having this powerful dog pulling me into the street or acting like an ape, wild child or rural cousin. When one lives in the city manners need to be impeccable with a dominant giant breed.
This is a very powerful dog. I am a female who lives in a city with 700 annual murders. I need a dog to protect me, and my home when I am at work, who won’t tear up my house, and won’t shed. We play together daily on our walks too. Once she is done doing her business (on command) i toss a plush toy/ball/rawhide, we have bonded, and while in adolescence they test you, you must remain the boss.
I found the best way to walk her and stay in complete control was with a horse halter. If a little man can control a 1000lb horse with it, well, it worked better than anything. Slight tugs and she senses what I want. Go right, left, change direction. Knows at least 50 commands, none of which are one words. I’ll ask, how much do you weigh, and she’ll get on the scale, go to place and she’ll get in her cage, let’s be friends, she gives me her paw, take a break means down, get on the grass means clear the sidewalk for people passing.
What you put in, you get out. This dog doesn’t need a yard, IF one makes them a family member and bonds with them. One can’t leave it in the back yard to train itself, it will get vicious. The one across the street is pretty rough around the edges, and my girl’s brother was taken back by the breeder because it turned vicious when it was picked on as a puppy by the already existing family dog. He grew up and attacked that dog.
BRTs need guidance. I would not recommend this dog to anyone who is not willing to groom it, attend obedience classes from puppyhood, socialize it and truly bond with it. It sheds minimally, and not at all as a puppy before 8 months. Do not get if you have kids less than 4, they can easily be knocked over, like a dopey Great Dane, not because they are aggressive. Mine is super sweet.

This breed has NO business being in the city with no yard. Sure some people will say they can do fine in a city apartment but they are only being selfish and/or fooling themselves, if you need a protector in a city there are many breeds a little smaller a BRT that will do better in an apartment, BRT males can easily be 140+ lbs and 30+ inches at the shoulder, females are slightly smaller but you are still talking about a 105-130lb dog. This breed also was bred for Siberian winters, if you live in a hot climate like Texas, FL, OK etc look for a different breed that tolerates the heat better.

I have a Black Russian terrier bitch. She is a wonderful dog. These dogs are family dogs. They take their job of protecting and living their family very seriously. They are not yard animals They are obedient and very smart. She has been very easy to train. I knew her mother ; Yes she comes from a good AKC breeding line, has a beautiful coat and confirmation, but we do not show or do any if those things. She is a well loved pet, who let our son ly all over her. Yes,
they are big
