Q: What can I give to my puppy who has diarrhea?
I think my 9-month-old Shih Tzu has diarrhea, her poo is like liquid, she's already pooped twice and she's not eating her food. I know its best if I take her to a vet, but I have to wait for my sis to come home. What can I give her for her diarrhea in the meantime? I already made her drink plenty of water so that she won't get dehydrated.

Pedialyte, brown rice and boiled chicken & mix some unflavored all-natural yogurt in a little food.

Canned pumpkin. Make sure it's pumpkin and not pumpkin pie mix. Should help. They can get dehydrated quickly so don't wait last 3 days.

To be honest, it's not uncommon for a dog to have a bout of vomiting or diarrhea and a vet visit is not required unless there is blood in the stool or vomit. I suggest, if you can find any, is your stock up on a couple of cans of 100% pure canned pumpkin (not pie filling) and definitely not the organic pumpkin either, my dog hates that. But canned pumpkin will clear up a bout of diarrhea as long as it's food-related. If there is anything else that is causing diarrhea like stress, it won't work.
A couple of spoonfuls of pumpkin either mixed in the food or alone will clear diarrhea up in 12 hours. I found that giving Kaopectate or pepto doesn't work as quickly as pumpkin does.
If you can't get to a store or can't find the pumpkin then it's usually best to withhold all food for 12-24 hours to give the stomach and intestines a chance to settle down. Trust me the dog won't starve, but I do like to give Pedialyte to help with any dehydration. And if possible see if you can pick up a couple of cans of Hills I/D food, it's very bland and only available from your vet and is for Intestinal Disorders, It's what my dog gets when her stomach is upset. Good luck

There are oral rehydration salts available over-the-counter. Diarrhea in Shih Tzu can be caused by a lot of factors so it's not a good idea to guess. Take her to the vet ASAP.

I'd change your puppies food FAST! I have now owned several Shih Tzu's and here's what always has worked for us. First, go to a regular pet store and buy Dick Van Patton's (Natural Balance brand), dry puppy food in a bag
Then buy the Natural Balance roll food to go with it. Cut off a small slice every day of the roll food and mix it in with the dry food and you should be fine. Shih Tzu's are notorious for having weak stomachs and diarrhea; whatever you do, DON'T feed your puppy human food! I know it's a temptation, but if you want to treat your puppy with human food, stick to mixing in some well cooked scrambled eggs from time to time with the dry food.

My Shih Tzu will only eat the rawhide kabobs. She eats the meat on them and leaves the rawhide but I have a hard time getting her to eat anything else. I bought Royal Canin Shih Tzu food and she will not eat it and keeps barking at me for her chews. The cat loves her Shih Tzu food. He is a grey tabby and will eat whatever . and if there is nothing else he eats his try food.

I give my Shih Tzu dry food, if he eats that food in cans he poops creamy but, the big bad with a lot of vegetables and chicken (all dry food) is great for him and does his poop like a rabbit. (Not wet) I think whatever they eat is how they poop.
