What is a Good Low Price Dog Food for a Mastiff?

Q: What is a good low price food to feed a Mastiff breed dog?
I am seeking advice from people that own a Mastiff and use the food. Where can I buy it?

Depends on your version of 'low priced'.
I have Cane Corso and Dogo Canario and have fed them foods ranging from high to low quality. Pedigree worked fine…though definitely not the best. For the money, it's not bad food. 40lbs goes for around 22usd

I own large breed dogs and have worked with mastiff types for many years. Exactly how low price do you want to go?
If you are looking at buying from a store like Wal-Mart, Iams Large Breed or Purina One Large Breed would be my top two choices. Roughly $ 20 for a 20lb bag or about $ 38 for a 40lb.

From there would be a pet store. The best I've seen from there would be Blue Buffalo Large Breed. I had my boy on this for a while. He did great on it but seemed a little flatulent so I switched. Every dog varies. It's a little more expensive at about $ 27 for a 15lb bag.

Specialty pet stores carry higher-end premium foods which are not cheap by any stretch but are of excellent quality for your dog. Evo, Merrick's BG, and Taste of the Wild are a few to choose from. I Have used both the Merrick and Taste of the Wild products. My dogs love them. Price-wise, about $ 45 for a 30lb bag.

People will start screeching the second they see that I even mentioned Iams or Purina One. The reality is that people use these products and their dogs do wonderful on them. Do I use a better quality diet? Sure but that doesn't make everyone else wrong. Feed what you can afford and do the best you can for your pets. Best of luck to you in whatever diet you choose. Be sure to switch your dog's food gradually to avoid GI upset.

Wellness isn't that high priced and it is good.

We use Eagle Pack holistic for large and giant breeds. It’s a little pricey, but it’s good stuff. It’s about $ 45 for a 33 lb bag. I know other owners that feed Royal Canin, but I don’t know how much it is.

I feed Canidae (not awfully expensive, but way more than Purina). My big boy has issues eating grain, so I don't have a choice but to buy better food. I used to feed Solid Gold Wolf. Its a great food, but a little more money and my dog quit eating it.

An advantage to better food is that he poo's a lot less and smaller. And when you're talking about a LARGE dog – that's worth a bit more money.

I'm glad that some people do buy their dog food at Walmart! If money were not an issue, I'm sure many of us would feed Canidae, Royal Canin, or Solid Gold. But Dogs can eat the lower priced foods and be healthy and happy as well.

I feed my Mastiff Purina One and Purina Pro Plan, the Lamb & Rice variety. I never fed her puppy food, it's not designed well for giant breeds, just go straight to adult food. My Mastiff had digestion problems on Nature's Recipe and Nutro Natural Choice, but seems much happier on the new food (has been on it for about 4 months with no problems now).

I'd suggest not putting your dog on too low of a priced dog food. They have Eukanuba breed specific dog food for animals at any dog's store. They aren't as expensive but aren't such cheap dog food that it will hurt your dog in the long run. Two of the three mastiff owners I know use it. I use the boxer specific for my dog in Eukanuba. good luck.
