Is Purina Puppy Chow a Good Food for my Jack Russell puppy?

Q: I feed my puppy Purina Puppy Chow. Is this a good food for him?
I have Jack Russell. He is about 10 weeks. He is of a healthy weight. I just want to make sure that I am feeding him food that will help him thrive.

Purina is crap - full of by-products, animal digest (the crap at the bottom of the barrel after they process all the by-products and fillers), and other non-essential things.
That said, there really is no ONE food that is good for all dogs. If someone asks me what food I'd recommend, I give a long list: Canidae, California Natural, Nature's Variety Prairie, Taste of The Wild, Innova, Timberwolf, Royal Canin Natural Blend...

There are a lot more but these are good. You'll pay more for these foods but you'll also have to feed less because you're not feeding fillers and crap - that your dog will not process and will leave on your lawn for you to clean up!

Purina Puppy Chow is not what I would consider a quality dog food. It's full of junk ingredients & fillers which are nothing but empty calories which means your pup has to eat a greater quantity to get the nutrition he needs which means too many calories and too much poo. Try gradually switching to superior quality food like Innova, Solid Gold, Canidae, or Blue Buffalo. They cost more, but your puppy won't have to eat so much, so you should find that a bag will last longer. Check out the Natura (makers of Innova, California Natural, and Evo) and play around with their product comparison tool. It's rather educational and will help you pick the best quality food for your guy. Good luck!!

Purina is a reliable brand and contrary to popular belief your dog can eat Purina dog food and live a long healthy complete life. If you take a look at most of the boutique brands mentioned above most of them are all manufactured by a handful of companies and nearly all source their dry ingredients from the same rendering plant. Also, check for recalls you'll see that Purina has fewer than most of those expensive brands and they have a much longer history of producing quality pet food for generations of animals that far exceed the knowledge of many of these new independent boutique-style brands which haven't been around more than 10 years or so. Many of them lack actual feeding research behind these products as well. You'll do well by feeding Purina Puppy Chow.

Yes, that is a good brand. They eat puppy food for the first year and then go to adult food. If he starts gaining too much weight you can put him on diet food. Senior food at 7.

It's worked for my dogs and they love it. Fancy dog foods are great if you can afford them. My girl prefers Beneful to all other foods. Test with small bags when the dog is older and watch their hair coat and stool. Bonnie does best with Beneful. Weird. I had a dog that was devoted to Iams!!!

No way. Purina is loaded with By-products and fillers that will make your Jack Russell puppy poop more. I'm currently taking care of a Samoyed dog at my house. The owner feeds her Purina. She has a skin condition. She is constantly itching. She has chronic ear infections. Her ears are swollen shut from the scar tissue from the ear infections.

Since she's been at my house I've been feeding her Wellness dog food and she loves it. The saying is true "You are what you eat." I feed all my dogs Wellness and none of them have ever had an ear infection or any kind of skin condition.

When looking for dog food ALWAYS read the ingredients. There should not be any by-products, corn, or wheat in the food.
