How Much should I Feed my Chihuahua Puppy?

Q: How much should I feed my Chihuahua puppy to keep it healthy?
I don't have any experience with this breed. How much do Chihuahua puppies eat? What is the recommended food and portions for Chihuahua puppies?

To learn how much to feed your Chihuahua puppy read the amount on the package of dry food, then cut it in half. Remember, they are in the business of selling food. If your Chihuahua acts hungry, seems too slim, etc...just up the amount.

It depends on what kind of food you are feeding your Chihuahua. He needs dry food for his teeth. I recommend Eagle brand organic dog food it is better for your dog. About 1/2 cup in the morning and at night.

I raw feed so can only give you advice based on that. A Chihuahua pup needs the same amount of nutrients as a grown dog so feed him 2-3% of his expected adult weight.

For a chihuahua see this guide to get a weight estimate

Using the middle amount of 4 lbs or just under 2 kgs feed about 40-50 grams of meat, bone and/or offal per day. Try to aim to feed about 70-80% meat, 10-15% offal and 10-15% over the course of a week or two

I remember reading several studies where they talked about how Chihuahua puppies should be fed as much as they want to be fed, and that you should feed them 3-5 meals in a day if possible to make sure they get enough. Since puppies are growing, they may need more food or less food from day to day, so giving them a set amount isn't necessarily a good idea.

I would recommend setting 3-5 mealtimes (make sure you don't feed at the same time every day, but vary it by about 20-40 minutes so that your dog doesn't get stressed when 5pm rolls around and you're stuck in traffic, but knows the meal is sometime around 5 instead.)

Put the food down and as long as the puppy is eating, let him. When he turns away, pick up the food and put it away. Since you have so many meals, you don't have to put down a lot of food for this. Then just monitor the puppy's weight and if he starts to get too thin or overweight, adjust the food accordingly.

I talked to my vet last week about feeding, and he says to feed Chihuahua on the lower end of the amount they say to feed on the bag. Yes, the dog food people want the dogs to eat more food so you'll buy more, but it's close to accurate I think. Just make sure you visit the vet regularly and he or she should be able to advise you on whether you're feeding too much or not enough.
