HaHaHannah: Are whippets good house dogs? I'm a teenager & was wondering if this would be a good dog for me. I want something inside that is smaller dog & doesn't shed. (I heard whippets don't) Do they make good inside house pets & the occasional run outside? Tell me everything! Also, I was wondering if they get that large. I know they are very thin but I'm not sure about the height. I have a large yard & would be able to take it on runs frequently but I really want its main stay to be inside. Would that be best? Whippets have very little hair and it's short but again, ALL DOGS SHED. Other than that, whippets are excellent house dogs!! Great!! They are very sensitive to temperature though especially in the winter so intend on buying some fleeces for them. Another breed that barely sheds is a poodle. They are also good for kids. Yes, Whippets are racing dogs but do NOT require huge amounts of exercise. They will require a good gallop around and a nice walk but not the 30 -40 minutes 2x a day stuff you need to do with higher energy dogs. Whippets (and greyhounds) are bred for bursts of speed – not endurance. The only way you should own one is to have it indoors – they are not a hardy breed and cannot tolerate extreme temps especially cold. I can guarantee you that whippets shed but because they do not have a dense undercoat, it is short bristly hair that is easily contained. I can also guarantee that a whippet will do anything in its power to be up on furniture, particularly sleeping on your bed at night. These are one of my favorite breeds. They do not get very large, about 30lbs would be average. They are clean, easy to maintain, active without high energy, comical, and best of all, have few genetic health issues. They do require someone with patience as they are not, particularly food motivated in training. If you do not have the time to RUN them twice every day for at least 30 to 40 minutes, in addition to the regular walks ...then this is not the dog for you. Answer by Bulldoggespirit Whippets are great house dogs and thrive on being part of the family circle, they are also quite inactive indoors. However, they do shed a small amount. Good with kids and very loving and loyal. A good choice for a family pet but will chase cats etc. as a rule, after all, they are a sighthound bred for hunting but if brought up with cats should be o.k. Know better?
