Lexi: How much to feed a one-year-old miniature poodle? I might be getting a female miniature poodle soon (between 10 and 15 pounds), but before I do I want to make sure im ready. So how many times a day and how much food should i feed her? I would be taking her on a daily walk. Generally, for a dog of that size, about 1/2 - 3/4 of a cup per day would be enough. Age and metabolism also play a part, so any instructions are only guidelines and you may need to adjust the amount for your dog. How often depends on the age of your dog. Puppies can need 3-4 meals a day. Once the puppy is 6 months, you can reduce to 2 meals. Some puppies can have the number reduced earlier. Some small dogs may need to be fed more often to maintain blood sugar levels, but most dogs do fine with 2 meals per day. You don't want to feed to close to exercise. Wait about 1 hour before or after exercise to feed your dog. Small treats would be fine, but meals should wait. Answer by tj Every commercially prepared food is slightly different. It also depends if you're going to feed dry (preferred) or wet(bad for teeth) food. I would suggest a trip to your pet store and read some labels. Every bag will have guidelines on it telling you how much to feed based on the dog's age and weight. Go with that. But don't be surprised if your dog doesn't eat as much as the company wants them to :) My vet's rule of thumb? Hug your dog. If you can feel the ribs, you're ok. If the ribs are hiding under padding – she's getting plump. If all you feel are ribs – she's too skinny, add more goodies. Don't forget to look into the calories for the treats you plan to use – they can really add up. And go with a treat you can cut into smaller pieces.
