So I've always loved Lure Coursing great to watch, and right now my life is open to getting a new dog, and I want a Sighthound, I love the Borzoi, but they are very expensive and rare, so what breed should I get? Greyhound? Whippet? Which of the Sighthound breeds is less independent and more affectionate?
Oh, and how do I get into Lure Coursing? Join a club or something?, btw I live in Michigan

I am a HUGE sighthound fan!!!! Borzoi cost the same amount as any other sighthound breed and comparatively they are rather common, I love Azawakh and Sloughi, they are rare. But if you'd rather go with another breed, you should go with a Whippet. Greyhounds are great dogs too, they are both very similar, with whippets being more affectionate and greyhounds being more lazy. Whippets by far are less independent and they can be very affectionate.

For lure coursing, go to the website below and search for a lure coursing club in your area. A dog has to be at least 1 year old before it can compete in lure coursing.

You may also want to look into whippet racing, it's not a commercial track, owners enter their dog on a straight track, it's also similar to NOTRA.

KoAussie… Silken Windhounds are not long haired whippet. They look like they are, but they are a combination of several breeds that make up a unique breed of its own. Silken Windhounds are also NOT eligible to compete in lure coursing.

EDIT: Yes some Borzoi will cost $ 2000, but I have also seen some Whippets cost $ 2000, and I have seen Borzoi cost $ 1200, it depends on the breeder, the size of the litter, and the quality of the dog (as in pet quality, show quality, or breeding quality.)

Great idea to rescue a greyhound. A friend of mine did that and the dog is wonderful. She has a dignified but playful personality. I am glad U gave your location, because I can tell U that there is a lure coursing club in Ohio near Dayton, which would not be too far for U to visit. It is located in Kettering Ohio on Vandallia Rd, (Not sure on spelling — but close enough that U should be able to find this place — I think near an airport.) Try to look them up on Internet to see if they still exist. I went there many years ago to do a story on lure coursing, and ended up going back there with my dogs that I ran in dog sled races. There is a slight fee for running your dogs as it helps pay for the car batteries that they use to power the lures across the fields. They were a great bunch of people then. Could be a whole new set of faces by now. I'm sure there are other clubs. This is just one that I happened to visit a few times. I agree with U that the Borzoi is very attractive breed. But I would feel better about rescuing a race track dog, or if I had to buy a pup maybe a whippet. They are neat and clean and of course would fit right into a household because of small size.

Are Borzoi (Russian Wolfhounds) Good and Not Aggressive dogs?

One of my best friends owns a Borzoi which is practically the same thing as Russian Wolfhound, and her dog is a female, and super sweet and nice, she tries to cuddle too but she's tooo big so its a little funny, but they require a LOT of exercises... Lots!... Best of Wishes and Luck...:P

Borzoi, like all dogs, are not aggressive by nature. Due to the environment and/or upbringing, they may learn that bad trait. That is why it is important to look for a good breeder. Pets, not just Borzoi, retain the memory of mistreatment. Their personality will change and they will be more protective of themselves. This can be construed as being “aggressive”.

I’ve personally never had a Borzoi exhibit aggressive tendencies towards humans. Though some may be very aggressive towards other dogs. I presently have 5 male Borzoi and they are all family dogs having full roam of our home. They are extremely needful of attention and affection. Each has its own personality. A couple I would trust with a baby, others I would be leery. Regardless, a Borzoi owner must always remember that a Borzoi is lightning fast. Liability usually befalls on the biggest dog.

Thus, we do not take our dogs to dog parks. We do socialize the dogs by taking them with us to outdoor cafes. All our dogs appreciate the attention. Yet, we always keep a close eye especially when young children are around. You must respect ALL dog’s “space”. It is wise to allow the dog to approach you prior to extending a hand to pet the dog.

So in short to answer the question “Are Borzoi aggressive?”, no more than I myself can be aggressive if agitated the wrong way!!

First of all, Borzois are dogs. So saying "they are aggressive" or "they are not aggressive but very sensitive" is just not right. As with every other living being you have individuals.
You have to take into account that you get a hunting dog who hunts on sight with great speed. I have experienced several Borzois that were quite aggressive. And this not because they were aggressive by nature from birth on. But because their owners did get them only for being an accessor and something to look at. So they weren't interested in the needs of the Borzoi which can lead to an unbalanced and aggressive dog. So here the character becomes important. If you have a Borzoi with a higher aggressive potential, he might show this when underemployed.

To say that a Borzoi is less destructive than a Wolfhound, housetrains himself and so on is plain wrong. A Borzoi is a dog and an individual. As with every other dog breed or mix breed, you see some that are easy from the beginning and you see some that need more training and supervision. As a professional hunting dog for wolves, a Borzoi is not being born to be a perfect house pet from the beginning.

I have seen wonderful Borzois with owners that exactly knew what they wanted and handled the dogs accordingly. And I have worked with Borzois, that had developed problematic behavior.

To get to learn to know a breed, ask owners. A lot of breeders won't tell you the not so positive sides of their breed. (Don't misunderstand me: There are great breeders that will tell you all about their breed, positive and negative). But you will be on the secure side with owners experiences. They are not selling a breed, they are living with a dog and are more interested in everyday life.

If you respect the Borzoi for being a dog and being a hunter and if you are willing to satisfy his needs, you can have a wonderful companion.

Borzoi are sensitive dogs that are RARELY aggressive. They do not need a strong hand, they need a FAIR and GENTLE hand — too harsh a correction will mentally scar a Borzoi. The Irish Wolfhound is more destructive in its early years(immature for years); a Borzoi practically housetrains itself, picks carefully around furniture, and leans against your thighs for affection. However, a Borzoi, esp. females, are very discerning, rarely ‘outgoing’, preferring the company of their family only – they don’t usually allow strangers to pet them.

Females are more reticent than males. You must thoroughly socialize a puppy. Borzoi needs at least one solid workout a day: a good ‘zoom’ for abt 10 minutes around a fenced yard will do. After a certain age, even that can be skipped. We walk our senior 8-year-old girl twice a day, and on cold dreary days, she voluntarily curtails her walks in favor of warm couches. They do SHED LIKE CRAZY so be prepared for that: we vacuum up a Pomeranian every week.

They are not protectors. I have been owned by a Borzoi girl for more than a year now – she is silly and sweet in the home and reserved outside. They arbitrarily like some strangers, and won’t get near others, I still haven’t figured out my girl’s criteria. They are not “high-strung” but they are sensitive. The tail is their telegraph – You’ll learn quickly how to read the tail.

If you’ve never had a dog before, go to a dog show (find one in your area at infodog.com), and ask a breeder. Also, consider looking around for an “unfinished adult” – these are dogs that were meant to be show dogs, but for whatever reason never succeeded in the ring. So they’re adult, housetrained, obedience trained, reasonably well socialized, and usually relatively inexpensive to adopt. They were ‘fixed’ later in life, so they’re hormonally mature in the way puppies fixed at 10 wks are not, and will usually bond to you within a week or so. The best bet to bonding with a Borzoi — let it come to you. A Borzoi that chooses you does so FOREVER.

Greyhounds are the oldest of these sighthounds. Their origins date back to 3000bc. They like Salukis came from the Middle East and were used to hunt hares. Greyhounds are heavy dogs weighing up to 70lbs in the show ring, racers are smaller and lighter. They are up to 30 inches in height, but most you see come off the dog track and they are not that tall.

Whippets that came along in the 1800s for racing, and are the smallest of the dog breeds mentioned weighing less than 30lbs and about 20 inches in height.

Borzois came from Russia and were bred for the tzar to hunt wolves. They are the largest and heaviest dog breed listed. They are can reach 31 inches and weight over 100 lbs. My neighbors had 3 Borzois. They were magnificent looking dogs, with all that long flowing hair. We used to compare them to the breck commercial where the woman runs down the beach with her hair swinging and flowing about her.

They come from different parts of the world. They have different coats and colors.

Saluki – Persian with a rough short coat.
Greyhound – English with a smooth short coat.
Borzoi – Russian with a medium rough coat.
Whippet – European with a smooth short coat.

They’re all originally bred for hunting and the Greyhound and Whippet have recently become heavily involved in racing.

What if neighbor won't take a dog to a vet after injury?

John: What should I do if my neighbor won't take their dog to a vet after an injury caused by collision with a tree ?
The dog is a Russian Wolfhound (borzoi), and it ran into a tree the other day and now her head and leg are seriously bruised. She walks, but you can see she is in pain. Now, this guy won't take her to the vet. I have no clue why. He doesn't take his 2 dogs to the vet for vaccinations either.

Can someone tell me what i should do? should i call the humane society or what? He doesn't abuse the dogs, he feeds them better food than he eats himself, he treats them with respect, but he won't f*cking take them to the vet to get vaccinated or get xrays done on the dog thats injured.

well if the dog is just bruised and actually walking, then he will be fine.
sometimes its just like the regular doctor, a visit will just cost you alot of money for them to tell you that he needs "time" to heal.

and if he doesnt take it to the vet, and does this time, and the vet tells him that he has to go through surgery, what do you think he would do????
i know he prolly wouldnt go home with the dog.

What a horrible incident! I have a borzoi of my own and if I saw him run into a tree and bruised on his head and legs I'd take him straight into the vet. Borzoi have very fine bones and not much muscle mass compared to other breeds. They are very prone to injuries since they are built for speed. Much like a cheetah – if a cheetah is injured then its sentenced to death. Of course borzoi don't have to hunt for food now but it can seriously cause great pain. I would call the humane society or the police – anything!

I can pretty much agree with LU13.
We have 5 kids ourselves (the two legged variety) and we don't take them to the doctor for every little sniffle or fever. Our doctor appreciates this because sometimes it's just worse to bring them in rather then staying at home.

If it's bruised pretty bad, you can be sure that the dog will limp a bit. Bruises will do that even to a human.
Just keep an eye on the dog and if in a week or two goes by and the dog still seems to be limping then maybe suggest to the man that he should bring it to the vet and have the dog evaluated.

As for vaccinations, I know that in many states it is legal for you at home to give the DHLPP vaccine and I know in my own home state, the county has free rabies clinics. You can bring your dog, cat for ferret in for free rabies vaccines. It's very possible that this is what this man has been doing along as well. It can also be possible that he doesn't believe in giving the DHLPP ever year and in most states you can have 3 year rabies vaccines.

The above paragraph is just playing devil's advocate and hoping that maybe you will think a little more about it before possibly calling the SPCA on the guy for no reason.

This story is an excellently told one written by a woman who adores her large "sighthounds" as they are known by. They are Russian wolfhound's or, as Chantelle's preference for calling them "Borzoi" that quickly became her favorite pet once she saw one. The ultra beauty and grace of these huge dogs overtook her life and all she would have on her mind until she decided to obtain one was the "sooner rather than later" that would bring this dog into her home and life. When most of us have a pet or more, we generally love the animal and show our affection by petting, hugging, playing with it in various ways, walking it, feeding it, trying to have it get enough exercise, and maybe an occasional kiss. We usually, if it is a dog or cat, allow it to sleep in the same rooms as us and maybe even in our own bed. We do all we can to keep it healthy by watching its diet, taking it to a veterinarian when it doesn't seem to be acting in the right way and Chantelle did all of these. Chantelle had several other dogs in her life as she grew up and became an animal lover, mostly loving dogs.

There are not so many books about such a wonderful dog breed like Borzoi, and there are not so many good books about dog's love. Once In A Lifetime Dog, My Borisangel by Chantelle Hildreth was published a few years ago but you still can get it on Amazon (#ad) to read about Borzoi, and about love.

After searching animal shelters and breeders, "Boris" fell into Chantelle's life. He was born in 1995 and was 13 months old when she brought him home. Boris was a very active 146-pound dog and seemed to be as affectionate of Chantelle as she was of him. Some logistics had to be reconfigured for the big boy to sleep and run around, as he loved to do. During the time that Chantelle had Boris she also had a boyfriend who she married shortly, a very active mother and father who shared her love for large dogs, especially Boris, and she taught college courses part-time. It became hard to leave Boris to go anywhere and do anything without him being there since, in her heart and mind, he was with her all the time anyhow! As I read the book I wondered if Chantelle loved her husband, Foster, or Boris more since she showed so much attention and care towards Boris. Sorry, Chantelle!

Eventually, Chantelle got pregnant, still taught, and still would not ease off of her activities with Boris. When she and Foster had to work the parents would board Boris since they had dogs too. Boris fit right in with their dogs. When Boris seemed sick or out of sorts, Chantell also did. He would go to the veterinarian if he showed any distress. As Chantelle's pregnancy advanced, she tried to maintain the same activities with Boris all the while trying to find a new house they could purchase and start preparing that home for Boris and the new baby girl they would soon have.

Boris broke his hind leg one day while running towards Chantelle. She was heartsick. This presented many problems; how to get a huge dog to the veterinarian including getting him in a vehicle that could get close enough to where he fell with the break and, how bad was the break. After examination, the veterinarian decided he needed some screws placed in his leg since the joint was shattered. After surgery and a short stay in the clinic, they had to find a way to get Boris home and how they would move him around to relieve himself, feed him, keep circulation going through his body, and let him know he is so loved. I think that the entire family did so much to assist in the care of Boris. Boris showed little signs of improving even though the family made a sling for him that permitted them to move him for exercise. Several trips had to be made to the veterinarian and the clinic when Boris showed more distress. Eventually, Boris was in so much pain and at his young age for his breed, a decision had to be made to try to do more for him or let him be out of his misery.

As I have said, I think at times Chantelle loved Boris more than humans. He was her closest attachment and had been during the years he was healthy. I did enjoy the book but I personally felt that far too much money was used in the many health aides needed to keep Boris in good condition.

As a side note, I am a dog lover. My wife and I lost our two dogs this past year. Duchess was a sheltie type dog, brown and white. She was over thirteen years of age. She suffered a stroke and after several months of coddling her she returned to an almost normal routine but the few exceptions to the norm is what made us watch her more. Finally one day she started going in circles seemingly not knowing where she was or what she was doing. My wife took her to the back dog area where she continued running in circles, crashing into the fence. This was too much suffering.

At her age, we knew it was her time to go. The other dog was my buddy. Moose was a 135-pound German shepherd who we always called our gentle giant. A better watchdog and protector you couldn't find. He was deteriorating every week with his arthritis and was having extreme problems, then pain when he tried to get up or move. It hurt us so much but we could not let him suffer. He was over eleven years old, a good life for a large dog. They are both buried at the end of our property in our "Pet Cemetery". So Chantelle, as much as I loved these two dogs, my wife and I knew it was time. It hurts and you know that.

I was thinking of getting a female Caucasian Ovcharka puppy. She's three months old, and her owner can no longer afford her because he lost his job.

I have several dogs already and 105 acres to run around on (five-foot high fence). We also have horses, a cow, chickens, and sheep.
Would this be a good home for a Caucasian Ovcharka puppy? Also, what is the general temperament of that breed?

I have a 13 years old boy dog Caucasian, he is smart and beauty..but now he is having a heart problem and he is under treatment for over 2 years. I am 45 kg and 1.62 cm. but I can tell you that he was never aggressive to me .he was always just like a big nice cat to me. I have him sleeping in the same room with me now as he is old..he hates to have a bath by the way, so my opinion they are good dogs...but need love and care.

I would build a fence much higher. Caucasian Ovcharkas are known to scale 8 feet fences with no problem, and I would top of the fence too. these dogs are nothing to play with . they are weapons. make no mistake about it.

Train him/her well and you will be fine. Keep her/him around the family a lot till 1 yr.
This breed is extremely aggressive to strangers & it is a killer, meaning they knock their opponent down then go for the throat or stomach. A good percentage of the breed have this 2,000-year-old instinct in them.

Voice commands must be obeyed immediately, release time must be immediate & you must socialize the CO heavily, have people come around a lot, play with other dogs that she/he DOES NOT know. And training must be applied almost constantly until they are 4, their characters change, for example, the CO will love other animals until around 1 1/2 – 2 years of age then suddenly turn into hating them (not your family dogs just dogs they don't know). Postmen will die … your fence must be huge, can't have hikers walking through your land … but protection wise their ADD (active Defensive Drive) is unmatched. Three robbers breaking into your house with guns would have a problem with one of these dogs.

And please remember a Caucasian Ovcharka male (although standardly only 70-80klgs) can reach 110klgs. They can also stand 90 cm high at the shoulder (average is 75-80cm for a correctly fed male). They also have a stronger bite PSI, if given bones to chew on from an early age, than that of a lion.
My male could kill me if he wished, and rather easily.
They are killers to everyone outside the family unless heavily trained.
They more gorgeous and docile and loving than any breed I have owned with the family (this includes anything it considers family, including birds, fish, cats, pet rats) all are extremely safe.

They do require a "dominant" male but not always to lead them, especially the males.
Teach it heeling manners from a very early age, never let it pull even while in protect mode or anyone with less than 75klgs body weight goes for a concrete swim, they are incredibly strong.

...the dog was not really trying, that was warning mode and if I catch you I will kill you, but this is still a warning. When my Caucasian Ovcharka male (he is better now, heels no matter the mood) reacted to actual aggression he pulled me ten meters at 1 1/2 years old (the breed fully mature and stop growing later than most breeds around 3-4years old, although the last year is always limited in height and mostly muscle growth), I am 100 kilos & 185cm tall, who trains in the gym constantly.
