The governor of the Rampur, Ahmed Ali Khan Bahadur, brought this breed to life by combining the bloodlines of Asian Tazi and the English Greyhound, and gave it the name Rampur Greyhound.

The Rajapalayam hound is a very popular and prestigious dog breed also known in India as Poligar hound. Its Rajapalayam name is derived from Rajapalayam village, which is located in Viridnagar district of Tamil Nadu. This dog was the companion of the royalty and aristocracy in southern India. It was used predominantly for hunting wild boar and as a formidable guard dog.
Rajapalayam hounds were primarily bred and used by Nayakar dynasty of Tamil Nadu. These dogs have been used since time immemorial to guard rice fields, houses and farms, and have legendary stories around them as well.
