Caucasian Shepherds can be a challenging breed, suitable for a few situations. Full temperament is reached after 4 years old, they are wary of strangers, can be easily triggered, and can be quarrelsome with other dogs, especially same-gender dogs. The Caucasian Shepherd is an active guardian, not a stuffed toy, a "gentle giant" to the world, or a dog breed to be taken for granted.

Be prepared for a shocking reality check and 35 years of experience when you CALL. We sell breeding stock only to buyers who will responsibly develop the breed in the US by established standards.

Moderate pricing, breeders gainfully professionally employed, who breed dogs because of love and dedication to produce quality Caucasian Shepherds in the United States.

I have two Caucasian Shepards in South Florida for rehoming. Both of them were raised by us as puppies and my wife is originally from the Republic of Georgia. The male is 6 years old, 165 pounds un-neutered. The female is 8 years old 105 pounds unspayed. Unfortunately, my family and I have to relocate overseas and the physical and financial logistics of bringing the dogs with us is not achievable. They are both from show dog lineages adopted through a professional Russian breeder in Nevada. Their temperaments toward us are very loving and affectionate as can be expected from the breed. The female is people-friendly and caution is exercised around other large dogs. The male is territorial to new adults but has proven to be able to adjust to new people through feedings over a short period of time. He doesn’t prefer the company of strange dogs. These two get along well. They are absolutely wonderful animals and it saddens us to have to part with them, so we are looking for mature, responsible owners who can provide a good life for them. Previous experience with the breed would be preferable. Please let me know!

I am interested in the male. I am starting a homestead in the next month, already have my 35 acres and some animal. I want an active guard dog that can breed, because I want to raise Caucasian Shepherds. I don’t have any experience other then petting a few. I do have a TON of dog experience and training though.

    Hi there,

I was browsing around on adopting a Shiloh Shepherd when I came across this link on the Caucasian Shepherds and now my interest is piqued. The more I read about the breed, the more interested I got and would love to know more about them. A little about me; I used to own a 100 acre farm and ran a private rescue. During that time, I had rescued every animal imaginable from horses, alpacas, goats to bunnies and birds. And yes, even cats and dogs. I had the lovely opportunity to rescue a pair of Great Pyrenees once, and found them to be such lovely gentle giants. I now have a sweet German Shepherd; also a rescue, who has severe separation and trust issues. She is very bonded to me, and I have no desire to rehome her as I truly believe it would do her more harm than good. She was less than 24 hours away from being euthanized and I am the third or fourth person to have any dealings with her, and this girl has had enough bouncing around. I now drive a truck to pay the bills and had to give up my rescue efforts and since my GSD was the last animal I rescued, she stays with me in my truck.

I am looking to retire and get out of my truck in a few years, and I would love to buy myself a small piece of farm land and go back to my first love of farming, although on a much smaller scale. At this time, I would love to get into breeding these lovely Caucasian Shepherds. Which brings me to why I am writing this. I would like to know more not just about the breed, but also what I need to do to prepare myself to be a future responsible breeder, trainer, and promoter of this wonderful breed.

In case you are wondering why I’m looking into adopting a Shiloh Shepherd, I love bug dogs, more it is more for my GSD. I don’t think it is very good for her to be the only dog and having to rely on me to stimulate her. She is so smart and is learning new things every day, I do believe another dog would greatly help bring her out of her shell. She however would need a calmer companion dog, who is emotionally strong and level. I used to jog quite a bit in my younger days, and I would like to get back into doing that again, but being a lady out on the road alone, I would much prefer jogging with a fearsome looking dog by my side. I’m not looking for an aggressive dog, just one who’s looks say “I can rip you apart if you mess with my human lady”.

I return I can provide continual, consistent training and mental stimulation for both dogs, as I find bond and trust training so very rewarding and humbling. I find working with animals so refreshing, I don’t ever want to stop. It’s like therapy for the soul.

So sorry for my ramblings, but I really want to know more so I can be the best I can for the animals.

    Thank you.
    Jeanne.

      Hi Jeanne,
Thank you for your interesting story and for being kind to dogs and other animals. We agree that Caucasian Shepherd is an attractive breed but we are not sure that it is the best choice for you. Caucasian Ovcharka is a very large, strong, and naturally aggressive dog that won’t do jogging with you like you imagine and can rip anyone apart even without messing with its human lady.
These dogs will, if brought up in one family from puppyhood, guard that family but will attack any other human or animal. Actually, it needs a high and strong fence.

Thank you for your candid reply. I’ll have to rethink that one now. Maybe go back to my original idea of the Shiloh Shepherds. It isn’t good for my German shepherd girl to be alone, but she does need a more dominant breed to help her with her boundaries and structure.

        Jeanne.

I have 2 Ovcharka’s, ones temperament is aggressive (not mean aggressive, towards family) persistent and he is the runt. All black with a lil white on chest and tips of paws, actually exactly resembles the Romanian Raven Shepherd. My other one is tan, gray, black, white and beautiful, both are beautiful. They are brothers of same litter as i was told from the breeder and play hard. I was also told they have a lil bit of newfie in them. I don’t see it. I had a newfie my bf for bout 10 yrs til he passed so i know all about the friendly giants. The runt likes to rule the full grown, but doesn’t work always. they will occasionally fight. but not to the death., i won’t let them. they are the coolest, they have personalities that you could never imagine. Like they know exactly what your sayin to them and they answer you with their eyes. I love my Lil Man (black one) 75 lbs 1.5 yrs. old and Bro (tan, grey, black, white) 100 lbs 1.5 yrs old. They are the coolest dogs ever.

I rescued a Russian Mountain Shepherd (Ovcharka))who looks exactly like the loyal dog in the video “saving “ the little girl. He was chained up in a tow yard living on cement.

He is very typical for an Ovcharka in that he is very protective of whom he feels is his family but is quite aggressive with others.

He is three years old I’d guess and neutered. I’d love to find him a great hone with someone very familiar with this breed and the space for him. Is anyone out there who can provide a loving permanent home for him? I’m writing this January 21, 2021.

Your dog (name?) sounds interesting. I have been learning more about the breed for months now, and have had larger dogs for many years. (When working in West Africa also raised two leopard cubs to a serious size, then sent them to the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust, so their trusting behaviour would not get them shot by locals as “bush beef”) My last ‘protection’ dog (I am a retired U.S. diplomatic security agent) was rescued (literally) out of Eritrea, and was hell on four paws if provoked. We worked well together and had each others ‘six’ at all times.

I read a six foot high fenced yard is essential for CO’s. True? They seem a breed that would be too large for such high jumps, but what has been your experience? We also have a (rescued) head-butting maine coon cat, Would this be an issue when introduced initially? How does your dog do on walks, meeting strange dogs and people? Is he a couch potato, loving a sofa more than an orthopedic dog bed? (Sorry, but many questions!)
      I
By any chance am I lucky enough that you’re located in New England/Western Mass. general area? I would want to meet your dog and let you meet me & v/v before we made any final arrangements. JOE

I have a imported male Caucasian Shepherd that is 13 months old , He has too much working drive for our family. He has basic obedience training. He is a love and very gentle with our kids and animals. His lines is all working Dogs, Champion out of Russia. I have talked to one person who shows these Dogs and has shown them for 20 years. She said she would for sure breed to him with her females. He is very good looking.
My Daughter has opened a day care here at out home and the Parents are not liking that we have him here on the property. I will take an offer him, but only to a good home.
We really want him in a working home but a show home would be good to.
he has been with horses, dogs and kids. He loves the beach and long car rides. he is located in southern California.

We rescued a 2 year old female Ovcharka at the SPCA in Las Vegas. Why anyone would want to give up this beautiful girl is beyond us. I’m seeing that many of you breeders offer advice and dvds to help raise these headstrong dogs… I’d love some of that help even though I’m not searching to adopt from any of you. Our darling girl pooped and peed for days on end on the rug in the living room where we put up the Christmas tree. I’ve “neutralized” and cleaned and repelled (with essential oils) I have kids – and I don’t want to hurt her nose. At this point she’s slowed down, but still likes to take a dump on the rug when somethings out of the norm. It rained – she shat on the rug… omg. More important than poop is that she’s chosen to treat my 11 year old son like her prison bitch. My 4 year old can get her to sit, but if he (11y/o) stands up to quickly, she growls and snaps at him. We have asked him to stand up to her and forcefully say, no! or, down! when she acts up… we can’t always be there and she needs to get used to hearing his Batman voice… is it a fear smell something or does she just see him as the ultimate inferior? Maybe because my 15 y/o is antagonistic toward his 11 y/o brother – so she adopts his attitude and magnifies it?
Any tips, advice, booklets, videos… are welcome. Thanks!

A Caucasian Ovcharka is not an easy breed to deal with, especially for an inexperienced owner. She needs a leader, a master, and it should be just one person whom she respects. If you can become such a leader she will stop doing things that you don’t like. She will protect your children from various threats but she wouldn’t obey them. She may even try to teach them like she would teach her own puppies. Please read discussions devoted to Caucasian Ovcharkas on our website. People share their experience and give advice.

    Hi Again Folks!
I hope all is well with all of you out there! We dog lovers have to stick together, no matter which breed you love ( I love them all!LOL)
I ran across something interesting on you tube the other day. It seems like the gentleman clams he has brought back the original Molosser. He calls it the American Molossus. He clams to have brought back the ancient breed. He is effeminately very well versed in dog breeding and history, but after watching his video and going to his web page, it seems to me ( what do I know???) that he in effect did a crossbreed between a Neapolitan mastiff and an English Mastiff.
It’s really a beautiful and impressive looking dog. Like all huge dogs in the world, I wish I had one. He would have a lot of company! All the other huge mastiff breeds would be there. That’s the great thing about day dreams…we all can have them
I just thought I would bring it to your attention. It’s very interesting! Nuff said!
    Wishing you all the best!

We now own a 9 year old Rottweiler that is from a champion blood line. He is an excellent family dog and watch dog. We are wanting a new dog because we know our Major can’t have many years left. He had not been neutered but he had never used him for breeding. We do have a strong fenced yard in a subdivision with an electric gate. A new dog would be an inside dog just as Major is. He is not very social but we have had our sons dogs here both neutered male and female, and he is ok with them. I’m really interested in Gishia ( name my be misspelled) but not ruling out a puppy.

We have an air conditioned large home with a 5 year old Great Pyrenees (neutered) looking for either a 3-6 month old Caucasian Shepherd or a “Blackie” Russian Terrier. Male or female is fine. Loving home that knows how to work with large strong dogs. If dog is older than that it probably will not be best as with both breeds getting them early to train is necessary. One of my sons, Brennon posted an ad (we have three: 13, 16, 18). We are an American family w/Russian background

Thank you for your comment. We’ve just updated this page. Please view some new options for adoption, and also an ad from Las Vegas breeders who expect a new litter in June.
For Caucasian Ovcharka you can also check the notable Est-Alfa kennel of Vasili Platunov if they’ve got new puppies. In the case of your Great Pyrenees, the opposite sex might be better to avoid fights for leadership.
The Black Russian Terrier is a great choice too, and much easier to control than the Caucasian Shepherd.

I might add be careful because the US has already started to slightly mix this bred some & it makes for even a more dangerous dog because they lose that love of family they have. Why do we as Americans have to always try to change a dog breed like we have with so many & ruin them. Keep them pure like they were meant to be. They should not just be a show case for people to say look my dog is a champion.

that’s why I like animals better. people are mean & use them for fighting & puppy mills. animals don’t do that. humans lie, animals don’t, humans trophy hunt, animals don’t. they feed on the weak only. that way the herd breeds stronger. animals are true friends all the time, humans use you. they don.t want you to practice your religious freedom, so they kill you, animals don’t. you are very lucky to do what you do.
