Black Russian Terriers were bred by the Russian Red Army kennel to be guard dogs and to withstand Russia's weather conditions. They are confident, intelligent, dominant, and strong-willed dogs that need an experienced owner. On the other hand, Blackies are usually good with children when they have been raised and well socialized with them.

My dog tends to be somewhat protective..especially around my daughter, nonetheless a great dog. Word to the wise…start training early, use very good food (grain-free), and keep them groomed always! This dog tends to be very strong so let him know who is the boss, or you will have "Alpha" issues.

Ilya Koryavov: I come from Russia and my family had 4 of these dogs, since the late 1970's. All of them snored very loud and during the entire night but the last one, maybe the breed is getting more stable and something is changing, dunno.

DolleHengst: They say 8-12 years. Make that 10-14. They are very strong and healthy dogs. Most of them reach an age above 11. The English Wikipedia article also mentions their long lifespan.
U.C. Bear: I have an 8-month-old BRT, and he has only shed when he was blowing his puppy coat. If you brush them daily, they do not shed. Their hair does break off, though.
amareopuscanis: I purchased my current BRT from an American breeder who is an immigrant to the U.S.A.. I purchased him with the intent of using him as a working dog, mostly, my personal protection. All I can say is, my dog is an excellent working dog. He has a great bite and works well. He has protected me when necessary or commanded to do so. My dog has also won in the show ring...Best in Show a couple times. Honestly, I prefer working him then showing him and I think he does too.

dmacid: I had BRT when I was younger. My uncle had a small terrier, the most annoying thing I've ever seen. That dog was doing backflips for the hell of it and never stopped barking. When my BRT was around him he ignored him for the most part. Smacked him with its massive paw once but that was about it.
amareopuscanis: There is a reason for the long fur furnishing over the eyes. The breed was founded by the Red Star Kennel, which is within the Red Star Army. The breed was bred for guard and patrol work. When working at night, the long fur reduces the amount of glare that could be given off by a light. Thus helping the dog and the handler maintain a certain level of stealth. I often pull my BRTs fur up into a bun but he gets around fine with his fur down.
