Well, they are bred as guard dogs, so yes they are good guard dogs, however, they really are not for inexperienced dog owners.

The Central Asian Ovcharka and Caucasian Shepherd have a tendency to be aggressive with strangers. But much depends on the bloodline. People are selecting for a calm demeanor. Original or working bloodlines are tough.
I wanted them, but couldn't risk it with 4 kids and all their friends over. I opted for the Guregh because being A Livestock Guardian, prey drive was bred out. Love and Protect, but safely. They are also bigger. Like the Caucasian Shepherd, few health issues and long-lived.

So if get Caucasian Shepherd, research parents etc. Visit them.
Need a strong owner and controlled environment.

I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND this breed to your everyday average dog owner.
This is a difficult breed to raise, train and own.

If you are already wondering about this dog's potential as a guard dog while being your pet – that's a recipe for disaster in my eyes.
I suggest you stop thinking about owning this breed.
Perhaps do more research on other breeds you are interested in and then contact a REPUTABLE breeder to find out if the breed would be suited to you.

I like Caucasian Shepherds. I think they are safer and more reliable than pet dogs. however, don't keep it near babies under 3 years old.

My dad used to have a Caucasian Ovcharka (Caucasian Shepherd). It was imported from Eastern Europe. My dad was the only person who could deal with it. This bread of dog is really difficult to handle. You should start training and socialize it very early. What's also important is the breed line. It's better if its parents were mostly show dogs. Read more about the breed on this site. There are many people asking the same questions as you. Just browse to get answers.
