Q: How much do Great Danes usually cost?
I want to get a Great Dane and was wondering what is the normal puppy price? I’m not looking for breeding quality. I’ve always wanted a big dog because they make me feel protected.

The initial cost? Or the lifelong cost? The initial cost of buying a dog is cheap. A Great Dane'slifespann is around 8 years, and they can get very "sick" in the older years which make them very very expensive. Everything you buy for them (collars, leads toys, bed etc.) is double price because of the size of it. Food will be a lot, but not as much as you think. The puppies are at least 800+ dollars. Always buy from a good breeder, especially when getting a large breed dog because of all the hip problems that can occur when dogs are poorly bred. I would look at the AKC or CKC website for good breeders.

They range from 500-2000, it depends where you look. It’s always good to adopt rescue dogs and they are usually about 700 dollars. If you want to check your local aspca adoption fees are usually cheaper there.

Expect to spent about 100 a month on food, heart guard and flea medication. A Great Dane is not for everyone – I have plenty that were turned in to prove that. They are my personal favorite because they make me laugh out loud every single day.

The puppy itself can cost from 400-1500. Don't buy anything under 400. You'd just be supporting a backyard breeder, or chances are something is wrong with the animal. Also, check your local Dane rescue.
Then there's the expense of shots, and getting the animal fixed. For my large do,g i spend maybe 60 dollars a month feeding him.

The best place to look for a good Great Dane is still with a show breeder. Although you are not looking for 'breeding' quality, you have a better chance of getting a healthy puppy from a breeder that has taken the time to research their pedigrees, health test their breeding stock and show the breeding animals to their Championships. Every litter will have some pets available.
Cost is always depended on a few things. How many puppies were in the litter? Color, pedigree, the reputation of the breeder, etc. Just do your research, not all show breeders are ethical. A good breeder can spend thousands producing a good litter of Dane puppies. They recoup that some of the cost with the price of puppies.
A good reputable breeder will be more expensive than one that is not. A well-bred pet puppy from ethical show breeder of any color are generally $ 1200-1500. Sometimes as high as $ 2000
BYB breeders tend to be $ 1000 and less. But hold on to your wallet with vet bills. Good health in a Great Dane really starts off with the parents' good health. It must be tested and certified. A lot more than the local vet saying they were OK to breed.

Most Danes make poor guard dogs. They are indoor, 'hanging with their people' kind of dogs.

The cost really depends on the breeder and with GREAT DANE breed, I suggest you find one who REALLY knows this breed – – I WILL warn you though – – this breed is NOT naturally a good protector despite their size – actually, they tend to be big babies and are sweet in nature, not very aggressive at all unless they want to get into bed with you at night.
- How much is a purebred German Shepherd puppy without papers worth?
- How much would a typical Caucasian mountain dog cost?
- How much do purebred French bulldogs usually cost?
- How much to sell my boxer puppies for?
They also are prone to very serious heart conditions causing early and sudden death – if feeling PROTECTED is what you seek, please look in to Doberman, German or Belgian Shepard, Bull Terrier (not to be confused with "pit" bull), and of course Rotties. There are also many medium AND small dogs that are VERY protective, such as the Lhasa Apso!

Dreat Danes cost a lot. Adopt a dog, and it may just very well be cheaper.

Anyone who has researched and/or bought a Great Dane will tell you that average initial cost is $2,000. If gotten from a responsible breeder, they should not cost less than $1500. If you have never owned an inside dog before, please do not get a Great Dane. Many people have the thought that it would be fun (if you’re the right person for it, it’s awesome!) BUT there are so many people who don’t realize the actual facts of owning a GDB (Great Dane Breed) and then end up having to re-home the poor dogs or worse, mistreating them and severely neglecting them. That’s why there a so many Great Dane rescues out there.
If you’re just “thinking of getting a Great Dane” then please get one from a rescue. This will tell you better whether or not a Dane is for you. If you know a Dane is for you and you would like to show the dog or get into breeding Danes, then expect to pay $2000 at a minimum.
However, if you know you want a Dane (preferably with some experience!) and you don’t care about showing the dog or breeding her/him then you can find Dane mixes most anywhere and $500 is a reasonable price to pay but at that point the cost may vary widely.
No matter what, you will have to figure in much larger costs for supplies and maintenance (crate, leash, bed, messes, food, etc). The poop is ginormous and the messes they make in your house are bigger, too! Also, they CAN NOT be an outside dog. So they HAVE to be inside almost all the time, especially if you have extreme weather where you live (cold Winters with snow or hot Summers in the 90’s or above). Basically any weather that you’re uncomfortable in, Danes are too.
If you’ve gone through your checklist and have determined that you’re a Dane owner in embryo, THEY ARE THERE BEST DOGS IN THE WORLD!!!! So loving and sweet, calm and fun! You’re in for a roller coaster ride that will leave you elated and breathless! Good luck!

I would suggest going to a Great Dane rescue. They care for the dogs really well and it’s a great way to test the waters of owning a GD. THEY’RE NOT FOR EVERYONE!
