Taralyn H: Our New Caucasian Pup....?
Well I happened to stumble onto a website and found a breed I was interested in. The breed is a Caucasian Mountain Dog. I wasn't really looking for a pet at the time, but, hey I found myself looking for a puppy. After 3 weeks of search a found a kennel that had a litter of that particular breed and they are a excellent service. I've never seen more devoted people to there dogs in my life. Well I ended up with a 6-week old female Caucasian Mountain Dog puppy I decided to name Datvi. Well she is a handful and although I am getting advice from the kennel I thought I should ask other owners about there experiences with a puppy so that we can have a happy little puppy Datvi.

I'm very concerned with the fact that you got her at 6 weeks of age! Pups shouldn't be taken from their mother until AT LEAST 8 weeks!!!! The time between 6-10 weeks is crucial for puppies, because they learn to socialize with their littermates and they get important natural antibodies from their mother! A puppy taken from her littermates so young could result in a sickly, nervous puppy, though you may not see it at first. I would ask the breeders about this!
Now here are some pointers. I got my puppy about 2 weeks ago, so the best thing I can tell you is that you will learn better from trial and error than from anything anyone can tell you!!!! Training starts from day 1, because your puppy will be watching your every move to learn how you act and what you are doing. You will find that the puppy will follow you around for the first few weeks until she learns your behavior and becomes more independent. She will also try to establish pack order in your family, and you must make sure that she is at the very bottom of the pack. If you see that she is especially dominant over someone, have that person feed her and take her out, ect.
I recommend puppy obedience classes, because they are great for socialization, and of course, obedience! Don't take your puppy out to public places until after she has all of her shots! Thats very important, because it's very easy for a dog to pick up viruses and infections. When you take her to vet, carry her in and out. Again, many sick dogs pass through the vet's office, so be very careful.
I reccomend crate training as a great way to housetrain your puppy. When using a crate, do it very gradually, don't just shove your puppy in there and leave for a few hours.
Lastly but most importantly, give her lots of love!!!!! Let her know that you really care about her, and that she has a great home.
Well, these are just some basic pointers, and I wish you the best of luck with your puppy!

be very patient with the pup. She's only a pup and things like potty training and tricks dont normally come as quick as you would like them too. I have 7 dogs the youngest one being about 7 months up to about 3-4 years old. Patience is a virtue with any animal. *And dont forget to take time to play with her! :)

My advise is just to love her. Also you might want to start teaching her tricks and making sure she gets plenty of exercise. It is a good idea to keep your puppy energetic, so when it is an older dog it will stay fit, healthy, and it won't be as sleepy. Another piece of advise I'll give you is to use IAMS dog treats. You do not have to, but my only reason I am saying this is because of what happened to my dog. I don't know why this happened to him but he started breaking out on the end of his back and he would get red bumps everywhere. The vets gave him a whole bunch of medicine but the medicine never seemed to help. We changed his dog food and the treats we gave him and now he is perfectly fine and back to normal. Now I give him IAMS treats and nothing bad happens anymore. There are many great dog treats you can use. I am just telling you about an experience that happened to my dog. Its just a suggestion. Sorry if I got off track with that story but I hope my advise helps you.

Exercise, consistency and discipline – with lots of praise and love thrown in to make it take. Be consistent and make the people around you stay constant too. Praise for good behaviour and instead of scolding for bad behaviour correct and refocus the puppy where you want her and praise her when she does what you want. Exercise her and make it fun and do it every day it helps with excess energy and keeps them from getting stir crazy it's also a good way to acclimate her to her surroundings and training opportunities will abound. She's young though so don't make the exercise strenuous or too long. Try to get her interested in a kong ball those are fabulous.

I have had lots of different breeds of dogs one thing they all have in common is chewing. If she hasnt started yet I would reccomend investing in some smoked pig ears or cow hooves. The ears puppies will devour in a matter of hours if not sooner. It took a month and a half for our bull dog to go through the cow hoof. Also if your not crate training you could try the puppy pads they work pretty good. All my pups love squeeky chew toys and tennis balls. Hope this information helps you. Oh, yeah I also reccommend Frontline for fleas and ticks, I from North Carolina and they are horrible here, but that Frontline really does the job! Have a great time with your puppy, she'll be your best friend!

I have never heard of that breed before, but it sounds interesting. I had to handle two puppies (now they're full grown) and it is definitely a handful with even one, I can tell ya. Make sure to keep her on a very strict puppy diet and feed her absolutely nothing else (people food, dog treats) until your vet sais it's ok. Don't socialize her with other dogs until she is at least three or four or even more months old. Spend a lot of time with her and have a positive attitude!!
