Activity
The Black Russian is highly intelligent. They appreciate going for long walks, playing, and romping around. Fascinated with water and snow, this breed would be very happy rolling around in the snow during the winter season and playing in the water through the spring and summer months. Known to be prone to joint problems and being inactive indoors, it is essential for them to receive the exercise they need in another way, as exercise may lessen the joint stiffness.

Temperament
The Black Russian Terrier is a courageous, gentle, confident dog. Highly intelligent, this breed adapts well to training. Bred for guarding and protection, it is imperative that training should be done properly.

Brave, intelligent, affectionate, gentle with family, though stubborn, this breed is reliable but tends to be destructive when provoked. They are great with children and pets they were reared with. Although some of them may not like non-family dogs with a dominant personality. Generally, they do get along with most family pets that are much smaller, less-domineering friends as they are dominant dogs themselves.

Overview
The Black Russian Terrier is a largely built dog with a slightly stretched frame known for its efficiency and adaptability to different climates. They are dignified, active, and happiest with a family that is able to give them a lot of tasks to accomplish including obedience, agility training, and games.

Care
Because of their long and thick coat, the Black Russian Terrier requires a lot of grooming needs. Regular brushing and combing are important to keep the coat in great condition. Spraying coat conditioner twice a week on the dog's coat lightly before brushing is recommended as it adds shine, lessens dryness, and removes tangles. Paws should be trimmed regularly to prevent matting, so as the ear ducts to prevent infection. Bathing should be done once a month using a diluted specialty dog shampoo.

Training
The Black Russian Terrier should be trained as puppies due to their dominant and suspicious nature. It is important to socialize them with other animals and be frequently introduced to people in the public of every ethnicity, sex, and size as to decrease their aloofness and skepticism of strangers. This breed is highly intelligent and determined to make them easy to housebreak and behave on a leash. Excellent around children, there are generally no known issues to be around them while training. They excel in obedience type training and highly responsive to firm but positive reinforcement methods of training.

Character
The Black Russian Terrier is loyal, intelligent, courageous, protective, and reliable. They have balanced and stable temperaments with great trainability. This breed is a delightful companion and a loyal member of the family.
