I doubt there is a specific "study" or any real statistics with this kind of info. But, puppy mill puppies are ticking timebombs for illnesses and diseases. The parent dogs are nothing but breeding machines that never see a vet, live in their own excreta, and live in cages with numerous other filthy dogs.

It is estimated that 500,000 dogs are born in puppy mills each year. Ninety percent, or every 9 out of 10, of the puppies sold in pet shops, come from mills. Nearly half of them have serious health problems. “Citing a California state study that found that: 48 percent of the puppies in pet stores were ill or incubating an illness at the time of purchase”

I don't know what the statistics are but I bought a puppy from a puppy mill. She had an intestinal parasite that made her skinny and has diarrhea...We brought her to the vet and got her cured. The vet told us that every dog on that lady's property has that same parasite.
She is about five now and is still skinny as ever and cowers down when we go to pet her because of the trauma she had as a puppy at that place. Honestly, I would get another puppy from there just to save it. but that's just me.

l can assure you that the majority of puppies coming from puppy mills are either diseased or highly stressed which sometimes will lead to serious medical conditions.
Evidence:-Go to some of these puppy mills and have a look or check on the raids on them and see how many puppies have to be put down that are so diseased they cannot be rescued.
Puppy millers are cross-breeding with no care for the health of their animals in their charge and when you cross certain breeds that have both hereditary diseases which will only show up when the dog is 3 or 4 and it will it is pretty devastating.
Pet shops are supplied by puppy millers and BYB l do not care how much they deny it as it is illegal FOR any registered Breeder to sell to a pet shop although l must admit some have and some have been caught and registered.
Puppy millers are in for the money and nothing else so they do not care for the puppies in their charge and if one dies it is a loss of revenue for them and that is all and they can breed the Mother on her next Season or heat.
Go into as many pet shops as you can and have a good look at the puppies there. Many have eyes full of gunk or running eyes albeit the pet shops do clean them up as they have to or they could not sell them but no vets are ever called or used by puppy millers or pet shops or BY Bs.
Ring the ASPCA or SPCA and talk to people who are empowered to raid and they will tell you the state puppies and older dogs are in when the place is finally raided.
Percentage-wise l would estimate a good 98% are riddled with diseases which may not yet be seen others which can.
As a vet nurse l have had occasion to work with some of these puppy millers or puppy farmer dogs and puppies and it never stops to amaze me why they are not closed down permanently and also pet shops but there is a loophole in the US law which is being at present changed so some or most will be eliminated but it is a very very lucrative business and it is a business and only that so they have to run huge profits so vet calls are an expense they will not even contemplate and if a dog has to be put down a bullet is cheaper than an injection and you would be surprised how many high profile people are involved in this terrible trade including some prominent Vets and MPs.(house of reps or Congress or in other Countries Members of Parliament)

Aspca is correct about 98 percent are sick puppy mills are dangerous and breeding more dogs or cats is the reason why we have to put animals down its sad but true

i would say about 75% of puppymill pups are sick….@schnauzer’s i am a byber i raise healthy dogs their cared for like any responsible breeder cares for their dogs.my pups are vet checks first shots n worming before they leave the new owners get a shot record with their first shots n worming n the weight of the puppy.bybers are not puppymills.so dont put us in the same catagory.if anyone wants my vets number i will be happy to give it to you n you can call n ask him how i take care of my dogs n pups.

there is no way to really study that equation.Pet stores of course deny their pups come from puppy mills. Most people do not know if their pups come from them You can look into records of where they do the puppy mill busts and see what conditions the dogs are in when they are rescued. Lots of them have to be put to sleep because they are in such an unhealthy condition.I know of one smaller type puppy mill not so far from where we live. i know from the vet’s office we go to, where the puppy mill operator used to go to and I know the high incidence of deaths of both pups and adults because of worms, bad nutrition, mange, internal parasites, many genetic defects, etc. The person feeds his dogs a small piece of cheap bologna each day or 2. Maybe a little more for the expectant mothers. That is what they are fed. Water bowls are probably filled once every day or 2. These are reports from the vets and from others that have bought pups from this guy. He doesn’t watch when the pups are born. Loses many more pups than survive. People who do this do not do it for the goosd of the dogs. They do it for me and cut costs where they can so that they will make more. Of course with better care and treatment they would have more pups to sell but they are not intelligent enough to figure that out. These places are he!!holes for dogs and no living creature should have to live thru all of that.
